LEGO Universe: LEGO Star Wars Multiplied By A Million
KeyWord: LEGO Universe Date: 03-04-2008
Summary: LEGO Universe, the upcoming LEGO-branded MMO, can best be described as LEGO Star Wars multiplied by a million, according to Mark Hansen, the Director of Business Development for the LEGO Group.

The website of Wired released the new concept arts for upcoming LEGO Universe.

LEGO Universe, the upcoming LEGO-branded MMO, can best be described as \"LEGO Star Wars multiplied by a million,\" according to Mark Hansen, the Director of Business Development for the LEGO Group.

Tentatively set for release in 2009, LEGO Universe seeks to provide gamers with \"a virtual extension of the real-world LEGO\" gameplay, by allowing MMO fans a chance to virtually live among each of the thousands of LEGO sets that have been created over the years.

Most impressive in this quest is LEGO\'s plan to integrate fabrication of objects directly into the title.

Any structure or vehicle you may construct out of the MMOs virtual blocks, you can also export to LEGO who will allow you to purchase traditional LEGO sets that are exact replicas of what you\'ve created in-game.

The biggest hurdle to LEGO in creating LEGO Universe is the challenge of transitioning a toy designed to assist people in furthering their own creativity through multi-colored bricks.

To draw an analogue to the issue they face, it\'s almost a plastic brick version of what Will Wright had to do to create every title since SimCity.

According to Hansen, though, the creation system is only half of the title\'s design.

The game will also include a traditional MMO-style plot which reflects the barebones ideas presented in the firm\'s real-world brick sets: LEGO Knights vs Dragons, LEGO Sailors vs Pirates, and so on.

The title\'s release is roughly a year off, but Hansen did reveal the fact that the game\'s key trailer should hit the \'net near the end of 2008.

Certainly it is still too early to judge the game entirely, but as long as LEGO maintains their trademark attention to detail and appeases the rabid fanbase they\'ve created in the preceding 70 years, LEGO Universe could be the Wii of MMOs; It certainly bucks trends, but it does so with such confidence that players may very well adore a fresh take on the stale, overcrowded genre.

Why Champions Online? | 03-02-08

Why Champions Online?
KeyWord: Champions Online Date: 03-01-2008
Summary: I ask this question because it seems like nobody else in the industry is going to ask it. Why is Cryptic Studios making Champions Online?

I ask this question because it seems like nobody else in the industry is going to ask it. Why is Cryptic Studios making Champions Online? It baffles me that they would even think about persuing another game in this direction. Don\'t get me wrong, I liked City of Heroes and all that, and I fully believe in Cryptic\'s ability to make awesome MMORPGs based on superheroes, but it just seems so odd. Allow me to start from the beginning.

A few months ago, Cryptic and NCSoft agreed on a deal to transfer ownership of City of Heroes/Villains over to NCSoft. Before this, the game was published by NCSoft, and was owned by Cryptic. Cryptic then announced that they had been working on a new MMORPG, one that was not yet announced. Of course, everybody, at that time, knew that Cryptic had entered into a deal with Marvel and Microsoft to create a new super heroes MMO based off the Marvel comics entitled: Marvel Universe. It was naturally assumed that this was the unnamed project that Cryptic would be working on (MMOCrunch.com was no different). As it turns out, however, Marvel Universe got the axe by Microsoft and the title slipped into oblivion. Of course a few days after we all heard about the Marvel Universe news, we also heard about Champions Online.

Now back to my original question. Why Champions Online? Why would Cryptic, who already had a good relationship running a successful MMORPG for NCSoft suddenly sell their old property to them to begin work on a new IP based roughly around the same idea? City of Heroes was a success, and still is (130,000 subs and counting). Perhaps it was because NCSoft refused to allow Cryptic to make a City of Heroes sequel. Let\'s face it, most of the time, MMORPGs do not need/warrant a sequel. They usually aren\'t profitable and players from the first game don\'t want to lose everything they achieved to begin work on a new one for the sequel. So, is that it? Was Champions Online birthed simply because of NCSoft\'s refusal to support a sequel? Perhaps Champions Online was actually City of Heroes 2, but upon rejection of the idea late last year by NCSoft they decided to continue to persue it under a different name. We\'ll probably never really know...

Of course, a lot of my article here is speculations and conjecture. I don\'t know why exactly we have what we have today. However, it still seems a bit odd to me that Cryptic would want to sell City of Heroes and then go out and start a new MMORPG that would put itself in direct competition with their old IP. Something must have happened that caused the split between the two. But if not my theory then what else could have happened?

U.S. Spies Want to Find Terrorists in WoW | 02-26-08

The U.S. intelligence community is working to develop software that will detect violent extremists infiltrating World of Warcraft and other massive multiplayer games, according to the report from Wired.

Be careful who you frag. Having eliminated all terrorism in the real world, the U.S. intelligence community is working to develop software that will detect violent extremists infiltrating World of Warcraft and other massive multiplayer games, according to a data-mining report from the Director of National Intelligence.

The Reynard project will begin by profiling online gaming behavior, then potentially move on to its ultimate goal of \"automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world.\"

The cultural and behavioral norms of virtual worlds and gaming are generally unstudied. Therefore, Reynard will seek to identify the emerging social, behavioral and cultural norms in virtual worlds and gaming environments. The project would then apply the lessons learned to determine the feasibility of automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world.

If it shows early promise, this small seedling effort may increase its scope to a full project.

Reynard will conduct unclassified research in a public virtual world environment. The research will use publicly available data and will begin with observational studies to establish baseline normative behaviors.

The publicly available report which was mandated by Congress following earlier concerns over data-mining programs, also mentions several other data-mining initiatives. These include:

Video Analysis and Content Extraction: software to automatically identify faces, events and objects in video.

Tangram: A system that wants to create surveillance and threat warning system that evaluates known threats and finds unknown threats to issue warnings ahead of an attack

Knowledge Discovery and Dissemination: This tool is reminiscent of the supposedly-defunct Total Information Awareness program. It seeks to access disparate databases to find patterns of known bad behavior. The program plans to work with domestic law enforcement and Homeland Security.

The report gives no indication why the find-a-terrorist cell in Sims project is called Reynard, though that is a traditional trickster figure in literature.

Summary: Disney Online, part of the Walt Disney Internet Group, has created Disney Online Studios, a new team that will focus on building, operating and publishing an expansive lineup of games, virtual worlds and online social communities.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, February 20: Disney Online, part of the Walt Disney Internet Group, has created Disney Online Studios, a new team that will focus on building, operating and publishing an expansive lineup of games, virtual worlds and online social communities.

Steve Parkis, a Disney Online veteran, has been promoted to senior VP and will lead the newly formed group, reporting to Paul Yanover, the executive VP and managing director of Disney Online. Parkis will lead the Disney Online Studios team in publishing content that spans virtual worlds, casual online games, interactive and creative activities and social communities. The team will publish both internally and externally developed initiatives that utilize existing Disney characters and stories, as well as original intellectual property created specifically for online.

The formation of Disney Online Studios combines the talents of several of Disney Online\'s Internet teams. Among the groups joining the team are the creators of the award-winning Disney.com XD (www.disney.com/xd), a highly interactive broadband destination that combines games, video and community elements.

The newly formed division will also include Disney Online\'s Virtual Reality Studio, a group that started in Disney\'s Imagineering division before moving online to create virtual worlds that include Disney\'s Toontown Online (www.toontown.com) and the recently launched Pirates of the Caribbean Online (www.piratesonline.com). In addition to the existing resources, there will also be a significant expansion of the development, community, operations and publishing teams to more fully address growing opportunities in the online games and community space.

Taking on an expanded role within Disney Online Studios will be Mike Goslin, the VP of virtual worlds and one of the lead developers of Toontown and Pirates of the Caribbean Online, who has been appointed to guide the development of online virtual worlds and communities.

In addition to expanding and growing Playhouse Disney Preschool Time Online, Pirates of the Caribbean Online and Toontown, Disney Online Studios has previously announced development on virtual worlds built around the Disney Fairies franchise, which will be launched later this year, and the animated film Cars. More than 4.5 million personalized fairies have been created at DisneyFairies.com, which will ultimately become the gateway to the virtual world. The team is also actively looking to build and publish more virtual worlds and an expanded array of online games, interactive activities and social environments for kids and their families.

Disney\'s portfolio of virtual worlds also includes Club Penguin, which was acquired in August 2007.

\"Online games and community continue to be a key focus of our entertainment content,\" stated Yanover. \"As the number one ranked site for kids and families, Disney.com reaches more than 27 million unique visitors a month, and far and away the top reason guests come to our site is for games and other interactive online entertainment.\"

NCsoft: Tabula Rasa Report Inflammatory | 02-20-08

KeyWord: NCsoft, Tabula Rasa Date: 02-20-2008
Summary: NCsoft has shot down a \"sloppy and sensational\" article that called Tabula Rasa a \"financial disaster,\" but admitted potential layoffs may be in the works following the game\'s lackluster performance.

The website of next-gen.biz reported that NCsoft has shot down a \"sloppy and sensational\" article that called Tabula Rasa a \"financial disaster,\" but admitted potential layoffs may be in the works following the game\'s lackluster performance.

\"We still have problems with this guy,\"said NCsoft\'s communications director David Swofford in an email to Next-Gen, referring to the reporter who wrote the article.

NCsoft says it isn\'t the first time the reporter has penned sloppy articles about the publisher. Most recently, a Korea Times report suggested that the disastrous financial performance of Tabula Rasa was driving NCsoft to implement layoffs at its Austin, US-based studio.

While Swofford acknowledged that the game \"could have done a little better\" and that \"there\'s a possibility that there could be downsizing with the TR team\" , he was keen to counter a number of the claims made.

\"The Korea Times English edition story is full of inaccuracies,\"he said. \"No one at NCsoft said the product is a financial disaster. That came from the writer and is his opinion.

\"The TR development did not cost 100 million. I don\'t know where that came from. The price tag for the product was much less...a fraction of that cost. Tabula Rasa was not restarted more than twice. It had one overhaul and that came after 2-3 years of development.

\"The article made it sound like the TR launch led to some sort of falling out with Robert Garriott. That is so far from the truth. In fact Robert has been promoted to work more with CEO TJ Kim on business development. Yes Robert is out of the day-to-day operations, but he\'s still in the office and now travels much more for the company than he did before.

Blizzard have given us a look at a new area of Northrend, the area north east of Howling Fjord, the Grizzly Hills. Here\'s the description, pics and movie:

The lush, primordial mountains of the Grizzly Hills are a stark contrast to the snowy peaks that separate it from the Howling Fjord to the south.

In the heart of this wild frontier lies the ancestral home of the furbolgs, Grizzlemaw. For generations the tribal furbolgs have worshipped a colossal prehistoric bear that roams the surrounding wilderness.

Although the gentle furbolgs have grown accustomed to living in relative peace, recent incursions have forced the ancient tribes to engage in battle. Trappers are encroaching upon furbolg hunting grounds, and the goblin Venture Company has begun large-scale deforesting operations throughout the region.Despite the trappers and goblins, the most imminent threat comes from the north, where throngs of undead Drakkari ice trolls have begun pouring from their stronghold of Drak\'Tharon Keep.

The cause of the Drakkari\'s sudden invasion remains a mystery. The two races survived for centuries without conflict, but the furbolgs now find themselves in a desperate struggle to hold their land against the steadily increasing numbers of undead trolls.

The Alliance and Horde have recently begun efforts to establish a presence in the Grizzly Hills, yet this untamed frontier remains a vast and dangerous wilderness that until recently, time had forgotten.

Saga, a new Massively-Multiplayer Online Real-Time Strategy (MMORTS) game from Silverlode Interactive went into the shelves of over 4000 hobby and comic book stores in the US and Canada.

SAGA will be distributed in a retail display containing the game CD, a registration code and 3 booster packs. Individual booster packs will also be available. Each booster pack will include a card with a code that may be unlocked online to receive a virtual pack that will contain a random assortment of spells and troops.

Silverlode Interactive has partnered with Alliance Game Distributors, GTS Distribution, Diamond Comics and ACD Distribution to distribute its collectable online MMORTS SAGA to over 4000 hobby and comic book stores in the US and Canada. SAGA will be distributed in a retail display containing the game CD, a registration code and 3 booster packs. Individual booster packs will also be available. Each booster pack will include a card with a code that may be unlocked online to receive a virtual pack that will contain a random assortment of spells and troops.

Here\'s what happens when you open a SAGA booster: you\'ll reveal one of ten random cards, each representing a specific pack type, some of which are less common than others. Some of the specialty packs are the five faction packs, double-rare packs, dragon packs, spell packs?? This makes the retail version more exciting than the online purchase.

Following the success of Eye of Judgement and MapleStory, the SAGA retail product will allow Hobby store owners to carry a virtual collectable game. \"Hobby Stores who first spurred our imaginations with role playing games have seen a decline in sales with the proliferation of online MMO worlds, and the same decline is now being seen in collectable game sales as more and more games move online. But SAGA turns the tables, providing a retail product to the people who brought us collectable games in the first place,\" said Jason Faller, Executive Producer for Silverlode Interactive.

Unlike traditional RTS games that have 10 or 20 different units, the first SAGA set contains over 100 unique troops and over 50 spells in varying rarities. The common troops may be used by any of the five warring factions while most of the uncommon and all rare troops and spells are faction specific. Only the War faction can use Fiery Catapults, for example. Unlike traditional RTS games, troops in SAGA gain levels through questing and may be equipped with powerful weapons and armor.

Retailers are encouraged to contact their distributor before the pre-order deadline of February 22nd. Both products are currently scheduled to ship to distributors on March 14th.

About SAGA ?C SAGA is a persistent world RTS in an epic fantasy setting. Players collect troops, build armies, conquer new lands and build up kingdoms, complete with resource collection, city building and peasant management. SAGA\'s features include massive armies, multiplayer questing, guild wars, espionage, and an auction house for trading troops and spells.

SAGA has no subscription fees. Players pay as little or as much as they decide, by purchasing \'booster packs\' of random troops and spells, which are traded and customized to create the strategic army of choice for each player.

Summary: Wrath of the Lich King will introduce a vast new land and many new dungeons to the game. A multitude of strange and terrifying creatures inhabits the frozen continent of Northrend

With the release of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King closing in, Blizzard revealed new content.

Wrath of the Lich King will introduce a vast new land and many new dungeons to the game. A multitude of strange and terrifying creatures inhabits the frozen continent of Northrend, and you can now catch the first glimpses of the denizens of Northrend on the new Wrath of the Lich King Bestiary page. This page contains a sampling of the many new monsters you will encounter as you venture deep into the forgotten lands and desolate wastes of the Lich King\'s domain.

The first update features two monsters : the Nerubian Vizier and the Plague Eruptor.

Nerubian Vizier

The half-spider, half-humanoid viziers once served as advisors, sorcerers, and seers to the mighty nerubian spiderlords. But in the aftermath of the War of the Spider, the tables turned, and in the vacuum of their collapsed society, the cunning viziers rose to power. Utilizing their sorcery and high intelligence, the viziers have emerged as the rulers of the nerubians\' underground kingdom.

It is rumored that the viziers themselves may serve an unseen emperor, one who is destined to lead the ancient spider-people to a final victory over the Scourge. While many can only speculate as to the existence of this nerubian emperor, some continue to investigate the link believed to exist between the nerubians and the vicious insect race known as the qiraji.

Dark Age of Camelot : Grab Bag | 01-28-08

Posted Jan 28, 2008 by Keith Cross

The Grab Bag returns this week to once again answer a myriad of miscellaneous questions from the Dark Age of Camelot community

My question is, I have tested this against another character, how come I have not seen an elemental proc? I have however, been getting random debuffs on the bot (ABS, Constitution, Strength, Dexterity, etc) but it is not listed as a delve proc. Is the delve information wrong? Or is the coding for the correct proc on the weapon wrong?

A. The Bearded Wonder looked into this for us, and here\'s what he discovered: The debuffs are courtesy of the (invisible) Elemental that is summoned. You don\'t actually see the spirit elemental as it exists on a plane outside of ours, but you can see the effect it has on your target.

Q. How exactly does Camouflage work, and does it totally negate the effects of Mastery of Stealth when it is up towards other archers?

A. Yes, Camouflage blocks the detection range bonus from \'Mastery of Stealth\'. Assassins and Archers will rely on innate detection range against an Archer using camouflage. The Balancinator has spoken.
